A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen
A Doll's House is a three-act play written in 1879 that explores themes of identity, marriage, and personal freedom. It's considered a groundbreaking work of modern drama and sparked significant controversy upon its release due to its critique of traditional gender roles and the institution of marriage itself. Henrik Ibsen wrote this play during a period of significant social change in Europe, when questions about women's rights, individual autonomy, and the nature of marriage were beginning to challenge conventional thinking. The play was revolutionary for its time because it presented marriage not as an idealized romantic union, but as a potentially oppressive relationship built on inequality and illusion. At its heart, A Doll's House is a psychological drama about self-discovery and the conflict between personal fulfillment and social obligation. It examines how individuals—particularly women—are constrained by societal expectations and how those constraints can prevent authentic human connection. The play questions whether love can truly exist in a relationship built on deception, economic dependence, and unequal power dynamics.
